CHEMICAL PHYSICS GRADUATE PROGRAM

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL STUDENTS

1. A completed application. Complete the Online Application located below. For other application options, please click here.

2. A non-refundable application fee of $60.00. If you did not process your fee payment online via the On-line Application you may send it to the Enrollment Services Office using the Credit Card/International Check form.

3. One complete set of transcripts reflecting all undergraduate and graduate work completed or in progress. Each transcript must bear the signature of the registrar and the seal of the granting institution and should include the years of attendance, courses taken, grades received, class standing and the degree, certificate or diploma received. If the applicant attended the University of Maryland, College Park, the Graduate School will obtain your records of courses completed on the College Park campus. To facilitate the processing and review of an application, unofficial copies of transcripts from institutions other than the University of Maryland, College Park may be used for review processes. Official copies of those transcripts, however, are required before full admission can be granted.

4. A Maryland In-State Status Form, if you wish to apply for Maryland resident status. Students who apply online do NOT have to submit this form in hardcopy as well.

5. Three letters of recommendation submitted by professors or others who can assess the quality of the applicant's academic performance and scholastic potential. Be certain that the applicant's full name is included on each recommendation.

6. Statement of Goals, Experiences, and Research Interests. Many graduate programs require applicants to prepare a statement of their goals and objectives in pursuing graduate study.

7. Standardized Test Scores. The program require applicants to submit scores of standardized examinations, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), for standardized test scores, you may write to the following addresses for further information:

Examination scores should be sent to the University via the testing authority. The University of Maryland, College Park institutional code for the GRE is 5814.

8. Additional Graduate Program Requirement - Application Supplemental Form (ASF), which asks for department- or program-specific information. Applicants must complete the ASF. They will be notified by email (within 3-4 business days) after submitting their online application to the University. The application may not be considered if the requirements are not met. Should the application arrive after the stated deadline date, the application will automatically be considered for the next admissible semester.

9. International Applicants: In addition to sending the above materials, you must submit the following documents to have your application reviewed:

Visa: On The Graduate School application, prospective students are requested to note the type of visa they currently hold or will need to study at the University. In addition, if you are a current holder of a visa or Permanent Resident card, you must submit copies of that visa or Permanent Resident Card.

English Language Proficiency: International students must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Transcripts: The Graduate Admissions Office and the Academic Department must receive the complete application and official records/marksheets in the original language with literal English translations by the appropriate international deadline date. Translations should not be interpretive and actual names of all degrees, diplomas, and certificates must appear in the translation. Official copies must be submitted for review with your application. Only applicants who have completed the full sequence of preparatory studies and examinations equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree from an approved institution, and who have met the University of Maryland College Park admissions criteria, will be considered.   4. Three letters of recommendation from employers or professors who can evaluate objectively your capabilities for doing graduate work in Chemical Physics.
  5. Test scores of the GRE General (Aptitude) and GRE Subject (Advanced) Exams. Copies of the official test scores should also be sent to the Chemical Physics Program.
  6. Statement of Goals and Research Interests should be approximately 300-500 words.
  7. Send a separate application for each department if you are applying to more than one department on campus.
  8. Student I.D. Number - Please use the I.D. number assigned to you if you have applied to the University before. Your social security number is also your Student I.D. number.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:
  1. Completed application form. Submit application 7 months prior to the semester in which you wish to begin study at the University of Maryland. (January 1 deadline for the Fall semester, and June 1 deadline for the Spring semester for first priority).
  2. Use the Student I.D. No. assigned to you if you have applied to UMCP before.
  3. If you are applying to more than one department on campus you must send a separate application and application fee for each department.
  4. A non-refundable application fee of $60.00. If you did not process your fee payment online via the online application, you may send it to the Office of Graduate Enrollment Management Services using the Credit Card/International Check form. $60.00 must be submitted for each department that you are applying to on campus.
  5. Transcripts of all institutions attended must be received in this office as well as the Graduate Admissions Office. The transcripts should have an English translation.

  7. Official TOEFL score. The University of Maryland, College Park prefers that applicants take a TOEFL which includes the Test of Written English (TWE). It is now a requirement that all international applicants take the TSE and submit their scores to the CHPH Office. If applicants are unable to do so, or if their TWE score is lower than 4.0, admitted students will have to write an essay during the International Student Orientation when they first enroll at College Park. Since the TOEFL Score is absolutely essential to the CHPH Committee in its evaluation of a student's english proficiency, requests by students to take the TOEFL after acceptance by the Program will not be granted. A TOEFL Score of 600 or better is required if a student wishes to be considered for financial aid. Official TOEFL scores must be presented to the Graduated School in order to be admitted.
  8. Test scores of the GRE General (Aptitude) and GRE Subject (Advanced) Exams. Copies of these exams should be sent to the department as well as to the Graduate School.
  9. Visa. If you need to attend the University on a student visa remember to have financial information sent to the International Education Office. The "Certificate of Finances" form should be sent, with the application, to the Graduate School. If you will be solely dependent on an assistantship from the department please indicate this on the "Certificate of Finances".
  10. All students at the University of Maryland are expected to read, write and speak English fluently. International students must demonstrate their proficiency in the English language by submitting a TOEFL score or an IELTS score when they apply to UMCP. Graduate applicants must also submit a Test of Written English (TWE) score. International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) are required to take the MEI ITA evaluation before being assigned classroom duties.

    The Maryland English Institute administers the MEIPE (the Maryland English Institute Placement Exam) and the MEWT (the Maryland English Writing test) for students who have been provisionally admitted to UMCP. MEI also administers the ITA evaluation.

    Exams are scheduled on a regular basis throughout the year. Examinees must call MEI (301-405-8634) to register for the exam they are required to take. Those requred to take the ITA evaluation must be referred by their departments.

    Candidates whose MEIPE and/or MEWT scores do not meet the requirements for admission will be placed into an English language course. Students must enroll in and successfully complete the course in their first semester at UMCP. Students must be enrolled in at least 48 units to maintain fullt-ime status according to Federal regulations governing F-1 and J-1 students and should not be enrolled in more than 52 units. Students attempting to register for courses sxceeding this limit may encounter a block and should contact MEI. (Please note that full-time teaching assistantships or research appointments are equivalent to 24 units.) Upon satisfactory competion of the required UMEI course, the student's provisional admission will be changed to an unconditional admission. Tuition remission can not be applied to UMEI courses.
